HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all.. The news is light today, while tomorrow will be BLACK FRIDAY which means SHOPPING. Even so I found a few items of interest to read over while you have your turkey, your stuffing and possibly some wine.
As far as wine tips for Thanksgiving, mine run the gamut from racy to robust. Nothing is better than a Rose to get the festive moments going before the bird arrives. Opt for two of my favorites, the 2016 Margerum Rivera Rose Reserve. Made from 5 grapes, just like Doug Margerum’s M5s, the richness of the wine, coupled with the dry style makes it a hit. On the French side of the Rose world, many choices abound, but it’s best to go with the 2016 Chene Bleu Rose. Here is a classic style Rose made mostly from Grenache that is lively, fruity and still crisp. Next would be something from the Rhine grape varieties. From Santa Barbara County, the 2013 Clendenen Family Vineyard Gewurztraminer Le Bon Climat made by Jim Clendenen is a favorite as the lychee and apple spice notes, and a hint of sugar makes it winner. Another home run choice would be a wonderful Austrian white, the 2015 Brundlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen Riesling. Cool, crisp, loaded with fruit and a lingering finish, this has the backbone to go with the bird, the stuffing and even the cranberries..Two other picks would be the wonderful 2014 Cold Heaven Viognier and the 2015 Schloss Gobelsburg “Gobelsburger” Grüner Veltliner Kamptal where the baked apple and dried honey flavors compliment the best stuffing around .
On the red side of the house, go find any of the 2015 Beaujolais Villages, Morgon or Fleurie from the king of Beaujolais, Georges Duboeuf or if you want something bigger, go for a Pinot Noir from Oregon. My faves tend to run towards Andrew Rich or Eric Hammacher, two independent producers, but there are many excellent Pinot Noirs. And last but not least, there’s Grenache. And that of course is the very fine Comunicano Wine Company 2013 Ambassadors Blend or the 2015 S5. To have those though means Turkey with me……now, on to the news in today’s COMUNICANO.
